Dear PPS Families,
I hope you had a wonderful April break this past week. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back to school tomorrow, Monday, May 1st, bright and early at 8:10 a.m.! Remember to drop children off between 8:00 and 8:15 in order to be on time for school.
We are heading into a very busy time of the year at Porters Point School and throughout the district. Here are a some events you’ll want to make sure to put on your calendar:
PTO Teacher Appreciation activities:
- This week is National Teacher Appreciation week and the PPS PTO is prepared with some great events and activities to celebrate the wonderful staff at our school. I know they are looking for volunteers to help with set up, clean up, and food for a special lunch on Friday, May 5th. Please click this link to their Sign-Up Genius site to volunteer your help: https://m.signupgenius.com/#!/showSignUp/5080f4aa4ae23a13-ppsstaff
Wednesday, 5/3 - Walk @ Lunch Day:
- Students and staff will be walking at lunch on Wednesday, May 3rd to celebrate the benefits of getting some exercise mid-way through the day. Please feel free to sign in at the main office and join your child during their recess time to walk around a quarter-mile course on the back field at the school. I just checked the weather on Wednesday and we have a 40% chance of showers right now. If we have to re-schedule due to rain, I will send out a notice as soon as I know outside recess will be canceled.
- Recess #1 goes from 11:20 to 11:45 for the following classes: Mrs. Bissonnette, Mrs. Geibel, Ms. Nuttall, Mrs. Plunkett, Mr. Shepherd, and Mrs. Silverberg
- Recess #2 goes from 11:55 to 12:20 for the following classes: Mr. Allbee, Mrs. Belaski, Ms. Donnelly, Ms. LaRose, Mrs. Ryan, and Ms. Warren
Monday, 5/8 - Walk to School Celebration:
- On Monday, May 8th we will be putting more miles on our shoes with a springtime “Walk to School” event for PPS students. Like we did this fall, all PPS buses will drop students off at the top of Greenwood Drive so students can walk from Greenwood Drive to the school - a distance of about 6/10ths of a mile. We need parent/guardian volunteers to help walk students to the school starting at 7:45 a.m. If you are able to help in this way, please contact Sheila Doherty either by calling (264-5920) or emailing (sheila.doherty@colchestersd.org) by Friday, May 5th. When you call or email, please include the bus your child rides in the morning (if applicable).
Tuesday, 5/9 to Thursday, 5/11 - Colchester District Art Show:
- You won’t want to miss the Colchester District Art Show that starts on Tuesday, 5/9 through Thursday, 5/11 in the Colchester High School gymnasium. All schools are represented in the show, so viewers will see the development of student art skills from Grade K through Grade 12. The hours to visit are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day. Everyone is invited to a reception on Thursday, May 11the from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. where refreshments will be served. Students whose work is featured in the show will be given a personal invitation to attend. If you have questions about the art show, please email Ms. Vella at Amanda.vella@colchestersd.org.
Tuesday, 5/9 - PTO meeting:
- The next scheduled PTO meeting is Tuesday, May 9th at 6:00 p.m. in the PPS Library. The meeting is open to any PPS parent/guardian who wants to attend.
Wednesday, 5/10 - PPS Night at McDonald’s on Heineberg Drive in Colchester:
- McDonald’s on Heineberg Drive is hosing a fundraising night for PPS, UMS, and MBS on Wednesday, May 10th from 5 to 7 p.m. 20% of all sales during this time will be donated to benefit the PTO at each school. PPS families will get free ice cream cones for all children in the family just by saying that you’re affiliated with PPS. It’s the 30th anniversary of the restaurant, so expect balloons, wrist bands, and music at this event.
Wednesday, 5/10 - Grade 3 Orientation at Malletts Bay School:
- If your child is going into Grade 3 at Malletts Bay School next year, make sure to attend this orientation on Wednesday, May 10th from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the MBS Cafeteria. You can contact MBS directly if you have questions about the event: (802) 264-5900.
Events for in-coming Kindergarten families:
- Our annual Kindergarten Parent/Guardian Orientation Night is scheduled for Thursday, May 4th at 6:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Porters Point School. If you have an in-coming Kindergarten student, this informational event will help you know what to expect during your child's first year in the Colchester School District. This meeting is a parent-only event and we kindly request families do not bring any children with them.
- Kindergarten Screening is taking place the following week - May 9 through May 11. We are currently booking appointments for Thursday, May 11th from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. There are a limited number of spots available, please call soon to schedule an appointment for you and your child. During the screening, your child will spend two hours with a number of professionals including our kindergarten teachers. They will participate in a simulated classroom setting with a dozen or so other children who will also be starting kindergarten in the fall. They will be asked to identify items such as letters, numbers, sounds, etc. Parents and guardians will be following up on registration with members of our health and administrative teams. If you need access to a computer in order to complete your registration, please call Sheila in the main office at (802) 264-5920.
PPS Property and Playground:
- Once the weather gets warmer, the school grounds become a busy place after hours and on the weekend. The majority of the visitors use the playground and property respectfully, but we have had several problems with vandalism and inappropriate behavior on school grounds over the last few years. If you see something concerning on school grounds during school hours, please let me know right away (call 264-5920 or stop in at the main office). If you’re here after hours and have concerns, please contact the Colchester Police Department right away and then send me an email (Carolyn.millham@colchestersd.org) or leave me a voice mail (264-5922) so I can follow up. Your vigilance helps keep PPS safe for everyone!
Have a great evening and we’ll see everyone back tomorrow!
All the best,
Carolyn Millham, PPS Principal
